Scope of Job

Supervises and trains support staff in small animal care facilities. Inspects animal care facilities to assure compliance with regulatory agency standards and participates in all needed activities.

Description of Duties

• Supervises, trains, monitors personnel making sure that all SOPs are followed.
• Manages work schedules, ensuring sufficient staff coverage at all times.
• Initiates and participates in disciplinary actions.
• Performs annual performance reviews.
• Assists in hiring of Animal Care Attendant staff positions.
• Serves on rotation for weekend/holiday supervisor and on-call supervisor duties.
• Supervises, trains, monitors personnel making sure that all SOPs are followed.

• Assists in hiring of Animal Care Assistant staff positions.
• Serves on rotation for weekend/holiday supervisor and on-call supervisor duties.
• Oversees the receiving, transport/shipping, and husbandry of animals.
• Performs daily inspection of facilities to ensure compliance with regulatory agency standards.
• Monitors equipment to ensure operational efficiency.
• Submits maintenance requests and oversees maintenance completed within the vivarium on equipment and facilities.
• Monitors inventory of feed and supplies and places orders when inventory is low.
• Reports any general health problems and or deaths, major changes in normal room conditions, or facility/equipment malfunctions.
• Oversees utility shutdown within the area of responsibility.
• Performs office administration to include cage identification cards, animal census, and assist with assignment of research space within the vivarium.
• Assists investigators, as able, to reach their research goals within the vivarium.
• May periodically administer medications and treatments under qualified supervision.
• Monitors activities in the vivarium to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Informs PIs of delivery of animals and any change in animal health status.
• Participates in compliance inspections/site visits from IACUC, USDA, AAALAC International.
• Oversees cage identification and animal census system.
• Participates in regular cage inventory process.
• Maintains animal room logs per AAALAC recommendations / regulatory requirements
• Maintains attendance and time recording system.
• Prepares, compiles, and maintains animal health and equipment maintenance records.
• Assists with the compilation and maintenance of equipment, facility and animal health records.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a related area.

Preferred Education

Master’s degree from an accredited university in a related area.

Licenses/Certifications

Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification or higher from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). Preferred: Texas Driver’s License or ability to obtain within six weeks of hire.

Two (2) years or more of directly related experience.

Use of standard office and animal care equipment.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Standard laboratory setting, exposure to bio-hazardous material, extreme temperatures, odors, noise, vibration, allergens and humidity. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and will include the use of personal protective equipment (work in an ABSL-3 environment). Frequent travel and weekend work may be required. Working conditions are an indoor and outdoor environment with exposure to temperature variations, infectious diseases, and animals. May be required to lift up to 50 pounds while performing duties in the animal care facility.
